Publisher Square Enix has confirmed that Wii U is getting an exclusive Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut, promising the “best looking” version so far. We’re not convinced the “striking visual improvements’ promised by the company will outshine the PC version of the game, but exceeding the PS3 and Xbox 360 releases shouldn’t be an impossible task. It’s been co-developed by Straight Right, the studio that handled the Wii U version of Mass Effect.More promising than that, though, is the news that the director’s cut will feature overhauled boss battles, though exactly how they’ve been overhauled is as yet unclear. The controversial, outsourced segmentscaused ire among players when the game was released.Director’s Cut will, of course, also feature a raft of bonus features, including developer commentaries, in-game guides, the Missing Link DLC, a New Game+ mode and GamePad functionality.“The first thing we said when we decided to make a version for the Wii U was that we didn’t want to do a port. That’s really important,” executive game director Jean-François Dugas tells Official Nintendo Magazine during an interview in the next issue, out April 10. “It was not about, ‘Oh yes, just put it on there and that’s the end of the story,’ that would have been disrespectful for the fans and it would have been disrespectful for the Nintendo fans.“For us, it was important that we were envisioning an ultimate version in which a lot of modifications would be made, and also lots of new content would be added as well. So it was important to find a company that would think like us and would want to go the extra mile to make this version the ultimate version of the game.”

Shovel Knight will make its way to Wii U and 3DS if it reaches its Kickstarter funding goal. The game was previously announced for PC. Shovel Knight is in development at Yacht Club Games, a group of WayForward (Aliens: Infestation,BloodRayne: Betrayal) expats, who are currently at $32,000 of a $75,000 goal, with 25 days to go.
For those who want a Wii U or 3DS copy of the game, they'll have to pledge $15 of more, instead of the $10 that'll net a PC copy. Why? Yacht Club says it's due to the extra costs involved in console development (they aren't fibbing), like paying Nintendo for download codes, along with dev kits and certification requirements.
If you're heading to PAX East this week, Shovel Knight should be on display and the devs tell us they are "hopeful" it'll be playable.

505 Games has dated upcoming release Ashes Cricket 2013.
The game will be released on June 21st on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U and PC. That gives it plenty of run-up time in preparation for the commencement of the Ashes itself on July 10th.
The game features a number of dynamic features such as seaming wickets, deteriorating pitches and changeable weather that reflect real-life scenarios – cloudy days will favour bowlers, for instance, while a dry sunny day is good for batsmen.
“We are delighted to be able to announce some of the key features for Ashes Cricket 2013,” 505 Games’ general manager for UK and export Ralph Pitt-Stanley stated.
“This game has been created with real cricket fans and players in mind. The new engine allows players to mimic a cricketers most important attribute, his technique.”

Nintendo will launch the US 60Hz version of Punch-Out!!, the next Wii U Virtual Console release in Europe. The decision follows fan fury at the inferior 50Hz version of Balloon Fight launched on the PAL eShop in January.Nintendo of Europe subsequently shifted to the US 60Hz version of F-Zero last month, a policy it is evidently continuing.Punch-Out!! launches on Wii U eShop this Thursday, priced just 30p (€0.30).Also on the eShop this week - digital versions of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (on Wii U priced £49.99/€59.99, on 3DS priced £39.99/€44.99) and Need for Speed: Most Wanted U (£44.99/€59.99).There's a huge sale on Ubisoft games too, with ZombiU and Assassin's Creed both nearly half price (£30 instead of £55). Enjoyable downloadable-only title Little Inferno is cut-down in price again as well.

A number of big releases will this week enjoy significant discounts on Nintendo’s Wii U eShop digital game store.
Ubisoft has cut the price of all of its Wii U games, with big-hitters Zombi U and Assassin’s Creed III cut from (the admittedly extraordinarily high) £54.99 to £29.99.
Several have also been cut from £39.99 to £19.99 – Just Dance 4, Marvel Avengers: Battle for Earth, Rabbids Land, Sports Connection and Your Shape: Fitness Evolved 2013.
The cuts come as retail continues to discount the Wii U hardware in an effort to try and stimulate UK sales.

The self-perpetuating circle that is denting Wii U’s chances on the market has claimed two more victims.
Firstly, Saints Row IV publisher Deep Silver has confirmed to Polygon that the recently announced Saints Row IV is not due to make an appearance on Nintendo’s machine.
Secondly, fans of Dead Island: Riptide (which incidentally is also a Deep Silver game) have also been told not to expect a Wii U release for that title.
"One of the opportunities we had for Riptide was to continue the development of the engine, and really improve it and make a lot of refinements," creative producer Alexander Toplansky told Digital Spy.
"The things that are required to bring something to a new platform, you need to either really get to be integrating it deep into the engine, or you've got to [do] a port.
“Neither one of those was a satisfactory outcome for us, so we decided to do what we got platform-wise and just make sure that we can deliver the best experience we can."

March 17th, 2013, 00:30 Posted By: wraggster

Zen Studios has finally provided a concrete date for Zen Pinball 2 on Wii U in North America: Thursday, March 21. The free download will be available on the eShop next week, which lets you sample all available tables in Zen Pinball 2's vault for a limited amount of time before purchase is necessary.
Tables are purchased piecemeal through the in-game store, tables including the stock game tables and DLC such as the Marvel Pinball series and the Plants vs. Zombies tie-in. The freshly minted Star Wars tables have not been announced for Nintendo platforms, so naturally there's no mention of them in the announcement.
Finally, we'd be remiss if we didn't mention that purchases on other platforms won't transfer over to the Wii U. Zen Studios offered cross-play on PS Vita and PS3, but since the 3DS and Wii U use different stores, transferring already established content from the handheld to the Wii U is impossible.

Saint's Row IV will not be coming to Wii U. So confirmed publisher Deep Silver to Polygontoday, following the release of its debut reveal trailer earlier. The fourth installment in the series, developed by Chicago studio Volition, will launch on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC in the US first on August 20th and three days later across Europe. But despite joining the HD era with the Wii U released in November last year, Nintendo players will miss out on the sequel's over-the-top frolics, which promise to mark a climactic end to the series.

March 15th, 2013, 22:18 Posted By: wraggster
Wii U’s poor performance in the February US market has been compounded by worrying noise from the country’s leading games retailer.
“Following the holiday launch period, sales have been slower than we expected,” GameStop president Tony Bartel told Forbes. “Nintendo plans on launching some of their biggest IP over the next few months which we think will increase gamer interest.
“Software will play a big role in each console’s success over the holidays. We’re already seeing great developer and publisher support for PS4, so Wii U will need some great titles, especially first-party titles, to compete. There’s also a need to increase consumer awareness of the new features available on the Wii U and its tethered tablet features.”
Nonetheless, Bartel remains optimistic that the new consoles from Sony and Microsoft will enjoy a far stronger start to life on the High Street.
“It will be huge,” he replied when asked what impact the machines will have. “Dollars are flowing towards new technology so we believe gaming consumers are ready for innovation. We expect these new console launches to re-energize the entire industry.
“Video gaming is much more mainstream now than it was at the start of the last cycle, so there are a lot more dollars to fight for this time around. I also think consumers’ expectations for technology improvements are much greater now than it was seven years ago. Finally, gaming is becoming increasingly social, so continuing to expand the connection to other gamers will be key.”

March 15th, 2013, 22:15 Posted By: wraggster
Estimated sales of just 64,000 units in February have left Wii U facing up to the reality of being the worst selling new console in two generations.
Many had expected a better performance last month after an influx of pre-owned units on the market in January was blamed for poor sales at the turn of the year.
In fact, Gamasutra reports that sales in January were so poor that Wii U posted worse numbers than were ever seen with PS3, Xbox 360, PS2, Xbox or Wii.
Interestingly the only console that has in recent memory posted comparable numbers was the GameCube, and only then when the machine was on its last legs and its successor had already been announced.
Xbox and PlayStation machines have only ever posted similar numbers in weeks before a price cut was scheduled to be introduced.
Voices of dissent from within the industry are growing increasingly louder, with the perception being that Nintendo has to act quickly if Wii U is to reverse its fortunes.
Big hopes are now pinned on upcoming Wii U exclusive LEGO City Undercover, which hits the UK on March 28th. The game has a fairly decent 79 per cent average on Metacritic, but with Wii U’s install base still disappointingly small the game will have to hit the status of system seller if it is to have an overtly positive impact.

It’s not been a good morning for Wii U.
The console is posting a historically poor performance in the US and leading retail figures are urging action to reverse the slide.
Now Nintendo’s digital strategy is being questioned after it was revealed that gamers hoping to download LEGO City Undercover will need to purchase an external hard drive to do so.
Eurogamer reports that a rumoured file size of 22GB is to blame. The entry-level Basic Wii U ships with just 8GB of storage (just 3GB of which is free) while the Premium offers 32GB (with 25GB free).
It’s a bitter pill to swallow after Nintendo’s lofty promise of a concrete and competitive digital ecosystem for the console and makes a bit of a mockery of the console’s simultaneous digital and retail release strategy.
Considering that Xbox 360 and PS3 ship with hard drives with anything up to 500GB, the Wii U’s storage provisions look baffling at best.

GameStop president Tony Bartel says the US retailer has experienced "slower than expected" Wii U sales since Christmas. The executive told Forbes: "Following the holiday launch period, sales have been slower than we expected."Nintendo plans on launching some of their biggest IP over the next few months which we think will increase gamer interest."Notable upcoming Wii U titles include this month's Lego City Undercover and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, while Pikmin 3 is slated for release in the April to June window.3D Mario and Mario Kart games for Wii U will also be shown for the first time at E3 in June.Asked what he thinks Nintendo needs to do to compete with Sony and Microsoft this autumn, Bartel added: "Software will play a big role in each console's success over the holidays. We're already seeing great developer and publisher support for PS4, so Wii U will need some great titles, especially first-party titles, to compete."There's also a need to increase consumer awareness of the new features available on the Wii U and its tethered tablet features."In the past few weeks, multiple UK retailers have taken it on themselves to slash the Wii U pricein a bid to stimulate sales.Nintendo president Satoru Iwata flatly ruled out the possibility of introducing an official Wii U price cut in January.

It seems Nintendo has made good on its promise to utilise Wii U’s NFC tech by announcing a new Pokemon title that uses figures.
Eurogamer reports that Pokemon Rumble U, which was first announced last month, will allow players to purchase Pokemon figures that unlock in-game characters.
The use of the GamePad’s NFC tech has not been officially confirmed, but you can be almost certain it will feature.
Seven figures have been confirmed, with the first being Pikachu. The toys themselves will record game info internally. The core game will sell at a discounted ¥1,800 (£12.60) and the toys at ¥200 (£1.40) each.
There’s no word yet on a Western release for the game.
Nintendo will be counting on the allure of the still-popular Pokemon license to counter rival products from Activision and Disney. Of course, one advantage Pokemon Rumble U will (presumably) have is that it will not require an external ‘portal’ device to connect the toys to the console – meaning it will be able to undercut its pricier rivals.

Nintendo’s design boss Shigeru Miyamoto insists that he remains confident about the Wii U’s long-term prospects.
He does concede, however, that he had hoped for a better performance than the machine has achieved to date.
“I think that the Wii U still has a long future,” Miyamoto toldThe New York Times. “We really view it as being the ideal device that families are going to want to have connected to that screen in the living room that everyone is going to gather around and watch.
“Certainly in the short term I would want to see it performing with probably a little more momentum. I think in the long term I’m not at a point where I’m concerned yet.”
Miyamoto also made the bizarre claim that Nintendo has until now largely ignored the possibilities offered by an enhanced online infrastructure because the internet was simply not popular enough.
“For a long time at Nintendo we didn’t focus as much on online play because for many years doing so would have limited the size of the audience that could enjoy those features,” he argued.
