"We know the people who are buying a Wii U at launch are core Nintendo fans."
Tonight at midnight, stores across the UK will open at midnight to begin selling the Wii U, the first home console to hit the market in five and a half years. For Nintendo, it's something of an odd prospect - how to emulate the runaway success of the Wii's launch when so much of the market share it cornered was outside any other console's target demographic.
Are the millions of families who invested in that console ready to buy another one, do they understand the differences and do they care? We chatted to Nintendo's UK Marketing and PR director Shelly Pearce about the company's plans to reinvent the wheel again, who is being targeted and how, and came away with some interesting answers.
Q: You've got the official midnight launch tonight, at HMV Oxford St, as well as other stores which are opening too, what sort of turnout are you expecting?
Shelly Pearce: Well, we've already got people down there now, I think they've been down there since Saturday - so certainly the queue outside HMV is building up already. We've got a lot of pre-orders, but we do have stock available for launch day tomorrow. We're anticipating that there's going to be a good turnout tonight at the official launch, but we also know that there are GAME stores opening all across the country, so we're giving plenty of people the opportunity to pick up the Wii U as the clock strikes midnight.
Q: Events like these highlight the strong relationship between yourselves and bricks and mortar retailers, something which has undergone both scrutiny and change over the last couple of years. How do you feel that relationship has changed?
Shelly Pearce: Retail is still very important for us, I think it's really important to have presence on the high street, and we know that a lot of people still choose to go into a store to buy. While we are seeing more people shopping on line and downloading games directly through the console, retail is still a very important sector and I can't see that changing in the years to come. I don't think that there's going to be any dramatic change, certainly not in the immediate future.
"Retail is still very important for us, I think it's really important to have presence on the high street.
Q: In terms of the Wii U's marketing, I would imagine that you can't talk specific numbers, but how does the budget and portfolio compare to the marketing for the launch of the Wii?
Shelly Pearce: The campaign for the the Wii U is a very similar size to the one we had for the Wii, it's a very similar spend. In terms of the focus... for this launch we have been on TV but we've very much focused a lot of our activity on sampling, trying to get the Wii U into the hands of as many people as possible because it's so important to play it and try it for themselves.
Also, I think the big difference with the Wii launch is that a lot of our marketing has been online. Obviously we've been very much out there talking to core Nintendo fans and we know that online is where a lot of them are gathering most of their information. So it's become a much more important tool for talking to them. So we've had a lot of traditional online advertising etc, but we've also been filming the sampling activity and people's responses and reactions once they've played Wii U - we've been uploading those to YouTube.
We hope to launch tonight a YouTube channel that's very specifically focused on the Wii U and people's reactions, building up a bank of those. We hope people will be encouraged to be a part of that, adding their own reactions and comments to it. So that will be a large part of our marketing activity post-launch. Obviously we'll also be moving into more traditional mediums for advertising like TV and print.

Between launching the first game from 22 Cans,Kickstarting the second, and keynoting the Montreal International Game Summit, Peter Molyneux has been busy lately. Despite that, the famed designer has found time to get his hands on Nintendo's newest console, the Wii U, which launches tonight in the UK. Speaking with GamesIndustry International Molyneux expressed some mixed feelings on the hardware.
"I think the Wii U is good, but I don't feel it's great," Molyneux said. "I've played the experience, I've played Nintendo Land, I've played ZombiU, and they're good. I find holding the device in my hand--looking up at the screen and looking down at the device--slightly confusing as a consumer. It's good, but it's not great. And we really need these new pieces of hardware to be great in today's world, because the competition is not just consoles anymore. The competition is everything, all the technology. When you're holding a Kindle Fire or an iPad in your hand, it's just amazing technology. It really is. It's expensive, but it's amazing technology. And people like Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft need to match that. They need to match that in my mind, and exceed it. And I'm not sure the Wii U really did that."
Reservations aside, Molyneux was particularly interested in the Wii U's focus on asymmetric gameplay and a seeming abundance of indie games headed to the platform. He also noted that his expectations for a Nintendo console launch may have been set unrealistically high by the Wii and its breakout success Wii Sports. And even if the system falls shy of greatness, Molyneux said he has "enduring faith" in Nintendo.
"I've got unvelievable respect for Nintendo. They created our industry in a very real sense. I can remember everybody in the industry laughing and giggling about how stupid the Wii was, what a stupid name it was, and who would want motion control. And then it went on to sell what, 60, 70 million copies? It got people who never considered computer games to play them."
GamesIndustry International will have more from the Molyneux interview, including his reactions to backlash over 22 Cans' Kickstarter project, tomorrow.

Five days. In a tent. On the street. For a games console. Hurrah?
They set up their tent outside HMV Oxford Street on Saturday November 24th and tonight four students will at last get their hands on the pot at the end of their rainbow – the Wii U.
Izzy Rahman, Sing Duong and brothers Teddy and Michael Djuma – who together form development company Vertalex Studios London – decided who would officially be No.1 in the queue via a Mario Kart tournament. That Izzy Rahman won.
"We all grew up playing Nintendo, which is why we didn't want to miss out on tonight's official launch, and we just thought it would be fun to try to get to the front of the queue and enjoy the experience,” Rahman stated.
“It's been tough camping out in the rain and the cold, but it's been a laugh and it's also given us a chance to play loads on our 3DS handhelds and it's also given us the time to do some more games coding for our new business."
HMV’s Oxford Street store is the official launch venue for the new console and will be treated to extra stock to try and satisfy what is expected to be some very high demand.
Its doors will open at 11pm tonight. The first 100 in the queue will get a free copy of Super Mario Bros U and an additional freebie game from an HMV-picked selection.
"We can't wait to get the Wii U into the hands of our fans in the UK and are delighted to be partnering with HMV on this exciting night,” Nintendo UK marketing director Shelly Pearce stated.
“Not only will those that come down to HMV be amongst the first in the country to get their hands on the console but there will be lots of opportunities to try the games and to find out more about what makes Wii U such a unique new console."

Nintendo has confirmed that five independent games, and a demo of FIFA 13, will be available on the eShop download store when Wii U launches in Europe tomorrow. The line-up is almost identical to that which greeted those who bought the system when it launched in the United States earlier this month. WayForward Technologies’ Mighty Switch Force: Hyper Drive Edition is the only absentee, replaced by Neko Entertainment’s physics puzzler Puddle. Also available at launch are Trine 2, the striking puzzle-platformer from Finnish studio Frozenbyte; Little Inferno, which we reviewed on PC earlier this week; twin-stick shooter Nano Assault Neo; and asynchronous multiplayer action game Chasing Aurora. Look out for reviews on the site early next week. The Wii U eShop lineup in full:Trine 2: Directors Cut, £10.99/€13.49

Wii U’s processor runs at just 1.24GHz, less than half the speed of Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The claim comes from Marcan, a hacker who was part of the HackMii project which greatly streamlined the process of getting homebrew software onto the Wii.In a series of posts on his Twitter account, Marcan confirms that Wii U’s CPU runs at a little over 1.24GHz. Both PS3 and Xbox 360 CPUs run at 3.2GHz. Wii U’s GPU core clocks in at a shade under 550MHz, which is the same as the PS3, and slightly more than Xbox 360′s 500MHz.Eurogamer’s Richard Leadbetter was quick to query whether Marcan’s findings were taken from an idle CPU, saying the reading seemed “really low”. If not, though, it would go some way to justifying comments made by the CTO at Metro Last Light developer 4A, who said last week that the Wii U’s CPU was“horrible” and “slow”.What is clear is that Marcan is already hard at work on breaching Wii U’s system security. When asked by Leadbetter for further details he said: “Sorry, I’d rather not talk about how I got that yet. It doesn’t involve leaks, it involves Wii U hacks.”

Exec admits users should be able to use all the console's functions straight out of the box
Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata has said he is "very sorry" to consumers for the 1gb day one Wii U update they must download.
Speaking to IGN, the console giant’s global president admitted users should not have to experience a network update to take advantage of all of the system’s functionalities, and that the Wii U should offer these from the off.
The mandatory update to access the console’s online services weighs in at 2gb in total, and could take some users several hours to download.
“Personally I think that users should be able to use all the functions of a console video game machine as soon as they open the box," said Iwata.
"So I feel very sorry for the fact that purchasers of Wii U have to experience a network update which takes such a long time, and that there are the services which were not available at the hardware’s launch."

November 28th, 2012, 23:50 Posted By: wraggster
Yesterday's news that Microsoft sold 750,000 units of Xbox 360 hardware in the US during Black Friday week shows just how strong the platform still is this late in the cycle, but it could also mean that consumers looking for Wii U and not finding one decided to go with the cheaper option this holiday. Is it bad news for Nintendo? Not really, say analysts.
"If we had to estimate, about 400k units of the 750k Xbox 360 units were from new consumers who did not own an Xbox 360 prior vs. the Wii U where 400k consumers did not have a Wii U prior. So in terms of who picked up the most new consumers, it's probably a dead heat. And of course there were about 200k to 300k consumers who couldn't even purchase a Wii U due to shortages, so I do have to wonder if the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 picked up some users due to the Wii U shortage," observed EEDAR's Jesse Divnich.
Reading into it anything beyond this holiday would be a waste of time, he added: "It's a little too early for us to make any declarations on the Wii U's long-term potential. They are off to a fair start and it will probably take another month to gauge where demand may be long-term for the Wii U."
RW Baird's Colin Sebastian agrees. "I do think the Wii U faces a lot of challenges, but one week's worth of data isn't enough to put the nail in the coffin," he said.
"Microsoft's short-term MSRP reduction was and is aimed directly at undercutting Wii U sales out of the gate"
Lewis Ward
Sony has yet to release its Black Friday numbers, but both Sony and Microsoft have been offering attractive bundles to consumers this holiday season, and the fact is that the economy is still depressed and consumers want value. Sure, Wii U is supply constrained, but for some, spending less money is just too appealing.
"The economy is still a bit weak, and consumers are looking for value. PS3 and Xbox 360 bundles are priced for value and are more likely to be gift purchases," noted Inside Network analyst Billy Pidgeon.
Wedbush Securities' Michael Pachter added, "I think the strong Xbox 360 performance tells us that consumers remain price sensitive, and the recent cuts/bundles for the 360 present a compelling value. Once Wii U supply increases, I expect the console to sell better. That may not happen until next year."
IDC research manager Lewis Ward acknowledged that he thinks "Microsoft's short-term MSRP reduction was and is aimed directly at undercutting Wii U sales out of the gate" but he also remarked that what we're seeing now in the discrepancy between Xbox 360 and Wii U is nothing unusual.
"I never expected Wii U to outsell the Xbox 360 or for that matter the PS3 this holiday season. Nintendo effectively sold out the available Wii U units during the Black Friday week so it remains to be seen how many total units will be available at retail and will sell before the end of the year. Look at this another way: In late 2006, PS2 sales exceeded those of the Wii by a healthy margin - does that mean Nintendo should have thrown in the towel on Wii? Of course not. We've just seen the launch of brand new platform that will have growing pains and it's like judging a book by its cover in the extreme to draw long-term conclusions from Black Friday sales alone," Ward continued.
Ultimately, we'll have to wait several more months to properly assess how Wii U is faring, but strong interest in Xbox 360 could pose a problem for Nintendo, noted DFC Intelligence's David Cole: "Long-term the Xbox 360 doing well could be a problem because many of those buyers are potential Wii u consumers."

Death may be deficient when it comes to charisma and skin tone, but he boasts one of the biggest adventures of the year in Darksiders 2. The Wii U version of the grim reaper's star vehicle is as roomy as a hearse and comes packingnearly all of the game's DLC right out of its new blue box.
The Wii U revision isn't too ambitious in utilizing Nintendo's new hardware, though this also spares us from obnoxious mechanisms that don't do justice to the game's original design. Pairing different weapons, powers and protective outerwear with Death's taut physique is a simple time saver on the Wii U's GamePad, and it's a great deal faster than the sluggish menu that shipped with the other versions. You can, of course, keep the original menu and play exclusively on the TV or your handheld screen.
There's some graphical tearing on the smaller screen, but otherwise Darksiders 2 comes close to technical parity with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. There appears to be more shadow pop-in within the larger areas, but the framerate holds up just as well (which is to say, it doesn't always hold up when fighting gets frantic). Attacks feel responsive through the game pad – the light click of the right shoulder button works especially well for Death's graceful dodge – and they all work through the Pro controller if you prefer. The face-button commands are not remapped, however, leading to considerable travel time for your right thumb between jumping on B and manipulating the camera via the right stick.
Other Darksiders detritus ends up on the Wiipad too: you jolt the controller to spur on your undead equine transportation (that's the thesaurus result on "zombie horse"), and you tilt it to roll around the impractical, spherical keys that tend to litter ancient temples. Neither of these are preferable to doing it the old-fashioned way, so it's just as well they're optional control methods.
The best addition to Darksiders 2 on Wii U is the inclusion of post-release content, offered separately on other systems. You can start using some bonus high-level weapons and armor once you exceed level 5, while "Argul's Tomb," a bonus campaign that can be accessed from the main menu, offers extra traversal puzzles involving portals and Death's ghostly grappling hook.
The overall game doesn't get the polish on Wii U that it needed on other platforms back in August, but it remains a majestic blend of melee combat, puzzle solving and exploration. And if you squint, it's the best Steven Tyler game since Revolution X!

Nintendo's Wii U has yet to launch in Japan, but over there it's been revealed that the innovative Nintendo TVii app will be available when the console launches December 8th. Interestingly, the IR remote functionality that we've already seen packed in will cost 100 yen ($1.21) from Nintendo's eShop. The TV guide data will be pulled from Rovi's G-Guide service, ready to pull up even when you're not using the console, or in the middle of a TV show or video game. We still don't have an exact release date for the i.TV-based feature inNorth America (it's due in "select" European regions next year) but at least gamers can enjoy their Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and YouTube access until then.

EA expects its Wii U launch titles to get plenty of attention next week.
Both FIFA 13 and Mass Effect 3 Special Edition will be releasing alongside the console on November 30th.
“It’s always an exiting time for the industry and consumers when new hardware is introduced,” said product marketing boss for EA Sports and Maxis Dan Holman.
“FIFA 13 is our best football game ever on a Nintendo console. The GamePad radically changes the way you can play FIFA and opens it up to gamers of all skill levels. We have high expectations for FIFA 13’s performance on Wii U as a triple-A launch title on all new HD platforms.”
FIFA 13 – which sold over 7.4 million copies worldwide in four weeks – will launch with new features for Wii U.
Meanwhile, Mass Effect 3 Special Edition will include all the additional DLC plus GamePad support.
“The Wii U represents a new opportunity for the industry this Christmas and it’s great that Mass Effect 3 Special Edition will be part of the launch,” said EA Games and BioWare business lead Colin Blackwood.
“This is the first time that the Mass Effect universe will be on a Nintendo console and we’re very excited at the prospect of a new audience. We expect it to be at the forefront of the Nintendo Wii U offerings at launch.”
EA is amongst the big Wii U third-party supporters, which includes Ubisoft, Activision, Sega, THQ, Tecmo Koei, Disney, Namco Bandai and Warner Bros.

Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime has said that Microsoft and Sony need to come up with their own innovations in response to Wii U, because simply speedier processors won't be enough.
"In the end, our competitors need to react to what we're doing in the marketplace and need to figure out what their innovation will be," Fils-Aime said in a chat with CNET."It's likely that faster processors and pretty pictures won't be enough to motivate consumers. They need to react to what we've done and we need to continue innovating with the Wii U - and we will."
Fils-Aime also rejected any notion that the Wii U was simply Nintendo moving to 'catch up' with Microsoft and Sony's HD consoles.
"For us, launching new systems is about bringing new consumer experiences to the marketplace and we're doing that with Nintendo Land and third-party publishers are doing it with games like ZombiU. For us, now is the right time to launch new hardware."
Nintendo claims to have sold 400,000 Wii U units during the system's first week of availability in the US.

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has explained why the developer is bringingAliens: Colonial Marines to Wii U, but not its hugely successful Borderlands games.
"We get asked if there is going to be a Wii U version of Borderlands," he told GamesMaster."The reason why there's not is because we couldn't think of a natural, obvious, 'OMG, I want that for what the Wii U brings to the table' feature."
This, however, was not the case with Aliens.
"But with Aliens, the first thing we thought was 'Holy shit, I can have a motion controller in my hands!' When it's there in my lap it feels like I'm part of the movie."

In the pre-post-PC era, life was simpler for Nintendo and other successful competitors: Sell console. Sell discs. Repeat until wildly profitable. Six years ago, as Microsoft and Sony were taking part in a game of specification leapfrogging, Nintendo embraced casual and family gaming with the Wii even as it mostly ignored online play and convergent entertainment features. More than half a decade later, Sony has surpassed the original Wiimote with its Move controller and Microsoft has created a motion anti-controller with Kinect, but the Wii retains an advantage in that developers can assume the motion control is there.
Today, everyone in the games business still adheres to the basic notion of compelling software selling hardware, but the source of that software and the manner through which it drives revenue has changed via models such as digital distribution, downloadable content, free-to-play, subscription and advertising. In addition, Nintendo has launched the Wii U into living rooms in which game consoles must compete not only with each other but with Blu-ray players, TiVos, Rokus andApple TVs for physical connections as well as smart TVs and tablets as other sources of connected entertainment experiences. How it has addressed these challenges reveals much about what the company has held dear from the Wii, what it has reluctantly accepted and what it has now embraced.

Want to relive the labors of setting up Nintendo's new console? How about taking the aural route? DJ Cutman has cut together an unofficial greatest hits album from the Wii U's built-in soundtrack, encompassing memorable 'hits' like the firmware update and menu tunes. We've embedded one of Nintendo's decidedly relaxed tracks after the break, while there's a little bit more info (and some download links) for the unofficial project at the source below.
