A detailed look at the until now mysterious innards of the Wii U suggests that Nintendo’s machine will be eclipsed by the upcoming PS4 and Xbox 720.
The tech heads at Digital Foundry have examined the results of a detailed teardown of the Wii U hardware. The result is a machine that “is in a completely different league” to the upcoming hardware from Sony and Microsoft.
Indeed, the site goes as far as to say that the results “finally rule out any next-gen pretensions for the Wii U”.
It adds that while Wii U out-specs current machines like the Xbox 360 in some respects (it has 1.5x the “raw shader power”, apparently), it foresees few titles being able to squeeze out complex 3D processing in 1080p.
Also examined is the fact that multiplatform titles such as Call of Duty: Black Ops II tend to run worse on Wii U than the likes of Xbox 360, despite the seeming power advantage enjoyed by Nintendo’s console.
DF reckons Wii U’s 1.2GHz CPU is the likely culprit, which itself is a re-working of a chip seen in the Wii – which itself was an overclocked version of a GameCube processor!

Despite its general release two months ago, Nintendo's Wii U console would remain something of a technological mystery. We quickly gained a good idea of the make-up of the IBM tri-core CPU, but the system's apparent strengths are in its graphics hardware, and in that regard we had little or no idea of the composition of the Radeon core. Indeed, it's safe to say that we knew much more about the graphics processors in the next-generation Xbox and PlayStation. Until now.Detailed polysilicon die photography of the Wii U's GPU has now been released, showing the hardware make-up at the nano level and resolving most of the outstanding mysteries. However, the story of how these photos came into existence is a fascinating tale in itself: community forum NeoGAF noticed that Chipworks were selling Wii U reverse-engineering photography on its website, with shots of the principal silicon being offered at $200 a pop. Seeking to draw a line under the controversy surrounding the Nintendo hardware, a collection was started to buy the photos. There was just one problem. The shots were simply higher quality versions of what had already been revealed on sites like Anandtech - good for getting an idea of the amount of silicon used and the make-up of the overall design, but without the ultra-magnification required to provide answers, and therefore no further use in unearthing the secrets of the Wii U hardware. At this point, Chipworks itself became aware of the community money-raising effort, and decided to help out by providing the required shot - for free. It's a remarkably generous gesture bearing in mind that the cost of carrying out this work is, as Chipworks' Rob Williamson told us, "non-trivial". "Sourcing the images required to nail down the make-up of the Wii U GPU was the result of a remarkable community effort, plus the generosity of reverse engineering specialists, Chipworks."

The NeoGAF community started a collection to buy Chipworks' reverse-engineering photos of the Wii processors, but alas the existing photography wouldn't have told us anything new. On the left we see the markings on the heatspreader while on the right we see the metal shield removed and the GPU and CPU revealed.
So, what does the new shot below actually tell us? Well, first of all, let's be clear about how we draw our conclusions. Graphics cores work principally by spreading work in parallel over a vast array of processors. On the die shot, this manifests as the same mini-blocks of transistors "copied and pasted" next to one another. We know that the Wii U hardware is based on AMD's RV770 line of processors - essentially the Radeon HD 4xxx cards - so we have some point of comparison with existing photography of equivalent AMD hardware.Chipworks' shot is still being analysed, but the core fundamentals are now seemingly beyond doubt. The Wii U GPU core features 320 stream processors married up with 16texture mapping units and featuring 8 ROPs. After the Wii U's initial reveal at E3 2011, our take on the hardware was more reserved than most. "We reckon it probably has more in common with the Radeon HD 4650/4670 as opposed to anything more exotic," we said at the time. "The 320 stream processors on those chips would have more than enough power to support 360 and PS3 level visuals, especially in a closed-box system."It was ballpark speculation at the time based on what we had eyeballed at the event, but the final GPU is indeed a close match to the 4650/4670, albeit with a deficit in the number of texture-mapping units and a lower clock speed - 550MHz. AMD's RV770 hardware is well documented so with these numbers we can now, categorically, finally rule out any next-gen pretensions for the Wii U - the GCN hardware in Durango and Orbis is in a completely different league. However, the 16 TMUs at 550MHz and texture cache improvements found in RV770 do elevate the capabilities of this hardware beyond the Xenos GPU in the Xbox 360 - 1.5 times the raw shader power sounds about right. 1080p resolution is around 2.5x that of 720p, so bearing in mind the inclusion of just eight ROPs, it's highly unlikely that we'll be seeing any complex 3D titles running at 1080p.All of which may lead some to wonder quite why many of the Wii U ports disappoint - especially Black Ops 2, which appears to have been derived from the Xbox 360 version, running more slowly even at the same 880x720 sub-hd resolution. The answer comes from a mixture of known and unknown variables.

A senior hardware development director at Nintendo has defended the company's choice of CPU for the Wii U.
In November, a well-known hardware hacker published what is believed to be the Wii U processor and graphics card specs, revealing that the CPU carries a clock speed of 1.24 GHz.At half the speed of six year-old systems such as the PS3 and Xbox 360, the Wii U's clock speed immediately became the subject of criticisms.
However, speaking at a Kyoto investor meeting last week, Nintendo's R&D director Genyo Takeda insisted the hardware did not deserve the negative feedback.
According to Takeda the Wii U combines "low power consumption and a fairly high performance".
Takeda comments were in response to a question from an audience member who said the processor was weaker than other parts of the device.
"Regarding your comment that we focus on the GPU and that the CPU is a little poor, we have a different view," Takeda said.
"It depends on how to evaluate a processing unit. In terms of die size [area a chip occupies], the GPU certainly occupies a much larger space than the CPU.
"As you can see CPUs used for the latest PCs and servers, however, it is usual for current CPUs that the logic part for actual calculations is really small and that the cache memory called SRAM around it covers a large area. From this angle, we don't think that the performance of the Wii U's CPU is worse than that of the GPU."
Nintendo's choice of CPU was already being scrutinised. Oles Shishkovtsov, the chief technical officer at Metro: Last Light developer 4A, described the Wii U's CPU as "horrible and slow".
However, Takeda is claiming that raw CPU speeds are no longer so central to the overall hardware performance.
"We have taken a so-called 'memory-intensified' design approach for the Wii U hardware. It is no use saying much about hardware which should remain in the background in our entertainment offerings, but at least we think that Wii U performs pretty well."
Nintendo design guru Shigeru Miyamoto recently said it wanted "to immediately communicate the Wii U's value, but could not". According to the father of Mario, the company's development teams are resisting the distraction of the Wii U's disappointing sales performance.

505 Games has confirmed that Sniper Elite V2 is to make an appearance on Wii U, with the release date set for spring.
As you would expect, the game will be tweaked to make use of the Wii U’s feature set, chief of which is the GamePad. Using it players will be able to, amongst other things, tag enemies and booby-traps and monitor the blast radius of explosives without having to access in-game menus.
“Sniper Elite is just the kind of mature game that is perfect for the different mechanics of the Wii U,” CEO of developer Rebellion Jason Kingsley stated. “It’s been a challenge to get it right, but thanks to our team and the fantastic support of our partners at 505 Games we believe we’ve brought the unique gameplay to a whole new platform.”
Sniper Elite V2 is already available on Xbox 360 and PS3.

A little about the WiiU:
The Nintendo Wii U reinvent gaming in completely new ways. The new controller is a classic controller with a screen, gamers can leave the TV off while they play in single mode, then switch on the big screen to play party games with friends and family.
The motion sensing functions in the game pad let gamers use it as a window to the game, a world that stretches beyond the rectangular frame of the TV. Just lift it up to see the sky, and swing it left and right to see the expanse of the field. Hold it in front of you, and spin around to see the enemy that is sneaking up on you from behind.

Nintendo president Satori Iwata has said that the company has “not yet fully communicated the value” of Wii U, and it is not planning a price cut.We reported yesterday that city analysts are increasingly urging the platform holder to cut the price and release more major titles to maintain momentum, after Nintendo released disappointing sales figures and cut its forecasts in its latest financial report. In the financial briefing which followed, Iwata addressed the concerns directly, saying: “With Wii U, we have taken a rather resolute stance in pricing it below its manufacturing cost, so we are not planning to perform a markdown. I would like to make this point absolutely clear.”“However, given that it has now become clear that we have not yet fully communicated the value of our product, we will try to do so before the software line-up is enhanced and at the same time work to enrich the software line-up which could make consumers understand the appeal of Wii U.”He added later that the more complex Wii U system has been more difficult to sell compared to the simpler DS and Wii.“It is now clear that many consumers have not understood its product value. We would like to work thoroughly for its penetration.”“Both the Nintendo DS and the Wii have finally become highly-appraised platforms. The Wii attracted people at a glance, but it took us a rather long time to have many people understand the value of the Nintendo DS. The Wii U has a lot of factors appreciated by users, including the possibilities of the Wii U GamePad and Miiverse, and we are confident that it will have high sales potential once they are familiar to more consumers.”“We hope to change the situation from now and make a drastic improvement before the latter half of the year starts.”

Console giant to showcase its efforts to increase number of software developers at GDC 2013
Nintendo is focused on expanding its range of software developers through web technologies and coding platforms such as HTML5, JavaScript and Unity, company CEO Satoru Iwata has said.
Speaking during the console giant’s quarterly financial results briefing, Iwata said that with the large investment it takes to make big games, the diversion of web tech and the rise of indie developers, it was important for Nintendo to adapt to attract as many third-party developers as possible.
He said that Nintendo would reveal its plans to expand the number of software developers through the tech at GDC in March.
Iwata also stated that a number of Wii U services had been developed through web browsing engines, such as Wii Street U, which allows users to access Google Maps through their Wii U, some video on demand services, Miiverse and Nintendo TVii.
He added that using such applications meant Nintendo was able to release a number of services quicker than previous platforms and also use less development resources.

Nintendo's Wii U was supposed to get TVii when the console launched back in late November. That did not happen. Then, when it did launch in late December, two key features were missing: TiVo and Netflix. Despite insistence that the former would arrive in January 2013, Nintendo tells us that both are delayed beyond January to an unknown point in "early 2013." The company specifically notes that said integration is planned for the United States.
Google Maps and Street View, custom-tailored for the Wii U's tablet-like GamePad, were also given a January 2013 launch window when we first heard back in early December that they were headed to the Wii U. As it turns out, those are also delayed, albeit to a more precise "first quarter of 2013." This news comes on the heels of below expectation Wii U console sales, and word of not one, but two console updates coming later this year aimed at optimizing the hardware -- an issue we struggled with during our review of the console last year.

Nintendo now expects to sell 4m Wii U units by the end of the current financial year. That’s down from its previous 5.5m unit sales forecast.
It has also lowered its projected 3DS sales from 17.5m to 15m units.
The company also revealed that lifetime Wii U sales now stand at 3.06m units. 3DS sales have reached 29.84m units. Software sales for the two consoles stand at 11.69m and 84.99m units respectively.
The numbers show that sales of the Wii U outside of Japan and America have hit 900k. Japanese sales stand at 830k whilst American sales have hit 1.32m
A host of other forecasts have also been cut for the financial year ending March 31st 2013. Predicted net sales have been cut ¥140,000m to ¥670,000m. Operating income expectations have been lowered ¥40,000m to a ¥20,000m loss although net income expectations have climbed ¥10,000m to ¥20,000m.
Nintendo said these modifications “reflect a lower-than-expected sales outlook based on the sales performance in the year-end sales season and afterwards.
For the three months ending December 31st Nintendo enjoyed higher than expected sales of 3DS hardware and software, up 11 per cent and 41 per cent year-on-year. However, these gains were not enough to compensate for sharp declines in Wii and DS sales.
If nothing else though, the company has at least returned to profitability.
Net sales for the period reached ¥543,033m, down from ¥556,166m in the same period a year before. Operating losses fell from ¥16,408m last year to ¥5,857m.
Last year’s ¥48,351 net loss has been reversed to a ¥14,545m profit.
The company claims to have a “cavalcade of strong, fan-favourite software titles for both Wii U and 3DS” on the way in 2013 that “will help Nintendo regain momentum for Wii U”.

City analysts are calling for more major titles and a price cut to aid Wii U’s momentum following Nintendo’s disappointing financials.Nintendo said this morning that it had sold just over three million units of its new console between launch and the end of December 2012. Software sales were revealed to be 11.69 million, and it cut both hardware and software sales forecasts as a result of the disappointing results. The consensus among city analysts is that Nintendo needs to act fast to maintain sales momentum. A report on Business Week notes that a weak Yen is boosting the earnings outlook for the platform holder, but the analysts quoted in the piece weren’t quite so positive. “The result is worse than expected,” said Myojo Asset Management’s Makoto Kikuchi. “The company needs to do something to get out from a money-losing structure.”The Business Week report also notes that before today’s financials, Citigroup analyst Soichiro Fukuda stated in a January 14th report: “Nintendo is in a situation where it needs to launch major titles to ensure quick momentum improvement. If currently poor momentum continues through April to June, then we could see an early price cut, as with the 3DS.” Amir Anvarzadeh of BGC Partners Inc added: “These are horrible sets of numbers.”A report on 4-traders.com quotes Macquarie Securities’ David Gibson: “The business is not firing on all cylinders. It had a bad Christmas. We thought it was going to be bad, but this is even worse. It adds that Gibson believes Nintendo may be forced into a price cut and “accelerated introductions of popular game franchises”. It also notes the expected announcement of Sony and Microsoft’s next-generation consoles as a threat.Reuters’ report on the financials describes Nintendo’s outlook as “grim”. Bayview Asset Management’s Yasuo Sakuma said of the results: “We have been prepared to see weak sales forecast for Wii U as its sales performances in various regions have been widely reported. But it was negative to see a lower forecast for 3DS software as it is one of the company’s main sales drivers.”Nintendo fans will take heart from last week’s Nintendo Direct, which brought news of new Super Mario and Mario Kart games, plus a new Wind Waker HD remake. January 30th, 2013, 00:03 Posted By: wraggster
This week Nintendo will release its crucial third-quarter sales results and reveal how Wii U fared during its initial two months on sale. The company had promised to ship 5.5 million Wii U consoles by the end of March and end the financial year back in the black, thus avoiding a repeat of last year's damaging loss - the first in the company's history. The loss was described as a blip that occurred as Nintendo price-dropped the 3DS and wrapped up costly research and design on the Wii U. It was a cost the company would not repeat, Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata told investors. But profits for this year have already been revised down. In October, Nintendo forecasted a new, slimmer earnings margin for the year, with the Wii U's early success playing a critical part. It's this early performance that we can now try to evaluate, with the console launched and already past its first holiday sales season.Nintendo UK has remained silent about Wii U sales, but MCV reported first-weekend results of 40,000 consoles. It's a modest sum compared to other launches constrained by the level of stock allocated to the UK, although what did filter through to shop shelves didn't entirely sell out.Eurogamer has been told by UK numbers firm Chart-Track that, after five weeks on sale, the Wii U's initial sales figure counted for 50.1 per cent of the system's total. This indicates that Wii U sales in the UK were at the 80,000 units mark at the beginning of January. It's a huge drop-off in sales momentum after the console's initial weekend on sale, but one that is typical of other UK hardware launches: pre-orders and pent up customer demand will always make for a huge first week and, by comparison, first-week sales for the original Wii counted for 50.4 per cent of its sales total after the same five-week period. For Xbox 360 it was 54.6 per cent, and for PlayStation 3 it was 71.7 per cent.Wii U numbers as a whole are far less than other recent home console launches. We know that PlayStation 3 sold 165,000 units over its opening weekend in the UK, so another 29.3 per cent of sales would count for 48,345 units - pushing its five-week total to 208,000. Xbox 360 sold 70,000 in its opening weekend, so therefore sold 101,000 over five weeks. Finally, the Wii sold 105,000 units in its opening weekend, meaning in five weeks it had sold over 210,000. This leaves the Wii U, in the UK at least, lagging some way behind. But it's important to note that launch sales are just that. In the UK the PS3 outsold Xbox 360 by 2:1 at launch, but Microsoft's console has ended up selling significantly more than Sony's over its lifetime on these shores.

There is no Wii U version of Tomb Raider because developer Crystal Dynamics didn’t feel able to service the console’s full potential.
That’s according to creative director Noah Hughes, who as reported by GameSpot simply felt that they wouldn’t do the machine full justice unless they devoted considerable resource to the project.
"I'm always a fan of the Nintendo systems, in particular they really push interface design, and from a game design perspective it's fun to play with new interfaces," Hughes stated.
"Having said that, it's something that I think we would want to tailor the experience to if we were going to do it.
"All three [other console and PC versions] are really trying to deliver roughly the same experience, but delivered best on each platform, and I think something like. That's something as a gamer I love, but it's something you don't want to do half-heartedly as a developer."
All of which highlights what could yet prove a worrying trend for Nintendo.
Wii U’s limited install base plus the traditional failure of third party action titles on Nintendo machines already make publishing on Wii U a gamble. Add to that the perceived need to redevelop parts of a title to make the most of Nintendo’s innovations and we’re yet again in a position where third parties are shying away from Nintendo’s hardware.

Save game data for games downloaded from the Wii’s Virtual Console will not be compatible with the upcoming Wii U versions.
Nintendo announced last week that the upcoming Wii U Virtual Console will offer updated versions of previous titles that will offer off-TV GamePad support. That’s not a function available to existing VC titles.
There’s a catch, though – players who have already paid to download games from the Wii version of Virtual Console will have to pay a small additional fee (between $1 and $1.50 in the US) to download the updated Wii U versions.
Players can instead of course choose instead to directly copy their old VC titles from their Wiis (providing they still have access to them), although they will have to live without GamePad support.
The platform holder has now confirmed to Kotaku that any redownloaded titles from the Wii U VC will not be compatible with save game data from older versions.
To date only NES and SNES titles have been confirmed for the Wii U VC, although other platforms are planned to follow in the future.

Zen Pinball 2 on the Wii U was originally supposed to launch in December, but had to be pushed back to January. The North America launch is "coming very soon," developer Zen Studios notes – Europe can look forward to downloadingZen Pinball 2 on the Wii U eShop come January 31.
Zen Pinball 2 will be a free download on Wii U as it was on other systems, allowing players to sample individual tables free of charge which then may be unlocked in-game through purchase. Zen Pinball 2 features tables from Marvel Pinball, the Plants vs. Zombies table and many more. Thankfully not included: a sticky left flipper and a disgruntled pizza shop owner that wishes you'd actually buy pizza and stop hanging around playing pinball all of the time.
